This Is How Journaling Can Relieve Stress and Increase Productivity

Did you know journaling can help you not only relieve stress, 🧘🏾‍♀️but it can also help you to be more productive?

Journaling 📝helps you put everything that may be plaguing you on paper and be able to let those emotions and worries go.

Today, I wanted to share with you how journaling has helped me to relieve stress and also increase my productivity.

What Is Journaling? ✍🏾️

According to Merriam-Webster,

Journaling is the act of keeping a record of experiences, ideas or reflections kept regularly for private use.

I have used journaling to help me figure out my triggers for my migraines and when I just need to vent.

I usually vent to my friends or family members, but there are just some things that I did not want to share with them or hear👂🏾 their opinions on, so I would journal. 📝

There is just something about grabbing a pen🖋 and notebook 📓and putting everything that I am feeling down on paper. 📝✍🏾️

No holding back, literally word vomiting🤮 on the pages of that notebook. 

There is just something freeing to it.☺️

How Journaling Relieves Stress🧘🏾‍♀️


Journaling✍🏾️ is a safe place to get everything that is bothering you off your chest.

You and only you (unless you share it with people) have access to this journal. 📓

You are able to share EVERYTHING that you are feeling and not have to worry about being judged. 👩🏾‍⚖️

The only one judging you would be yourself and being able to manage your own thoughts💭 is key to a ‘judge-free zone’.

Journaling✍🏾️ is a form of meditation.🧘🏾‍♀️

You can write down your hopes, dreams, frustrations, things you have to get done for the week and the goals🥅 you have in life.

There is so much you can write about.

Journaling📝 can help you think better🧠👍🏾 as it helps you to focus on what is truly bothering you at that present moment so you can come up with solutions to that problem.

Again, journaling is a safe place for you to be angry,😡 sad,😢 disappointed,😔 frustrated,😤 annoyed,😒 etc. and have a place to put it which is down on paper.

What you do with that journal entry is up to you.

I usually burn🔥 mine.

Just kidding, I usually keep it for a little bit and then rip it up.

There have been many days I would journal (especially when I was in high school) about the people in my class who bullied me every day.

I would be so annoyed😤 and upset that I didn’t stand up for myself or shut those people down.

Journaling ✍🏾️helped me to get all of my emotions out and not keep them bottled up inside.

That was the main cause of most of my migraines…bottled up emotions.

2 Ways To Journal✍🏾️


When I journal,📝 I have 2 different formats.

One is a letter format ✉️and the other is diary format.📖

I would date the letter and put “Dear____”.

It could be myself(when I had to write a letter ✉️to forgive myself of not taking risks), God(about where I am in life and where I would like to be and how to grow in my spiritual walk🚶🏾‍♀️ with Him), or someone I am mad😡 at/ frustrated😤 with(this could be a coworker, manager, friend, family member, etc.).

I get it all out and either leave it in the journal,📓 tear it out and throw it away, 🗑 rip it up, give it to the person who made me upset or burn it. 🔥

There are so many options you can choose from, so choose the best one for you to help with your healing/mental stability.🧠🧘🏾‍♀️

Why Many People Don’t Journal✍🏾️

Unfortunately, there are many people out there who do not like to journal. 📝

They see it as a “diary”. ❤️📖

That is another reason why I call it a journal instead of a diary.

Diaries are for kids and journals📓✍🏾️ are for adults. 😆

Anyways, the word diary or looking at journaling as such freaks out a lot of people.😨

Also, some people may not truly understand the power of journaling. 💪🏾📝

I sure didn’t when I first started out.

My aunt was the one who introduced me to it.

She knew about the struggle😩 I was going through when I was in high school (by the way this is when I started journaling📝😊) and the stress/pressure I had on myself.

She knew that when I put everything down on paper,✍🏾️ I can get all of the emotions out instead of letting them build up inside.

That just causes stress😖/migraines😣/stomach issues🤢/I hope you see👀 where I am going with this…

Benefits of Journaling👍🏾📝

There are also a few benefits you get when you journal✍🏾️ that many people may not realize.

Here are some to keep in mind🧠:

  • Relieves stress instantly(for me it does)
  • Pressure and a huge weight lifts off your shoulders
  • Form of meditation and reflection🧘🏾‍♀️
  • Increase productivity✍🏾️
  • Helps you to focus and figure out what is going on

How To Get Started Journaling📝 For Healing💆🏾‍♀️ and Increased Productivity✍🏾️


Getting started with journaling is literally as easy as picking up a piece of paper,📄 a pen,🖋 and just start writing.✍🏾️

You can also get a virtual notebook💻📓 like Microsoft OneNote and journal there if you like typing better.⌨️

I do both, write and type.

To really get started with journaling you will need an actual journal📓 and a quiet place to start. 🧘🏾‍♀️🏝

Once you get that pen🖋 in your hand✋🏾 and open up to your first blank page,📄 just start writing.✍🏾️

It doesn’t matter if what you are saying makes sense or if your handwriting is neat.

All that matters is that you are getting off your chest what is bothering you and what is causing you pain.

Again, it could be a mistake you made or someone saying something disrespectful to you😡 and you didn’t handle it the way you wanted to.

Or maybe you wish you stood up for yourself against a bully.

Many journal entries📝 were written✍🏾️about this growing up.

I didn’t use my voice🗣 much so I didn’t shut those people down.

I went home sad most days, but hey you live and learn right.🤷🏾‍♀️
