Don’t you just LOVE grocery shopping? 🍎🍇🍊🍌🥬🥒🍅🛍🛒
I don’t know about you, but I STINKIN LOVE IT!😆
I enjoy picking up the latest fresh, organic fruits, 🍎🍊🍓🥭🍒vegetables,🍆🥑🥦🌽🥒🍅 meats,🥩🥓🍗🍖 and dairy products🥚🧀🥛 to be able to create some EPIC meals🥘🌮🍱🍲 for the week. 😋
The grocery store I go to is clean and well put together and the people who work there are SUPER helpful and polite.
So I usually get up bright and early on a Saturday morning☀️ (aka 11am), grab my reusable bags,🛍 and head on over to my local Stop & Shop.
Today, I am going to be talking🗣 to you about the benefits of using reusable bags, the different types of reusable bags out there, tips to for using reusable bags, and the main reusable bag called BagPodz I use.
Let’s get into it!
5 Benefits of Using Reusable Bags🛍
Now there are a ton of benefits you can get when it comes to reusing grocery bags.
So that you are not reading📖 about benefits all day, I am only going to touch upon 5 main benefits you can get from using reusable grocery bags.🛍
1. Less Plastic On the Earth🌍 and In Our Oceans🌊
Did you know about 4 trillion plastic bags are produced and used globally🌎 every year?
That is a ton of plastic! 😱
In addition to that, right now, there is a continent-sized island🏝 of plastic bags floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. 🌊
Now that is just disgusting.🤢
I am pretty sure you wouldn’t want a pile of plastic bags just chilling in your house🏡 all day.
This is exactly what we are doing to many birds🦆🦅 and sea creatures🦑🦞🐙🐠🐬🐳🐋 right now.
There have been upwards of 1 million birds and over 100,000 sea animals who die annually due to the consumption of plastic bags.
Many of them confuse these floating bags with sea life that they usually eat such as plankton and jellyfish.
The plastic bags clog up their digestive tract and these animals usually starve to death or if they get tangled in the plastic bag or bags, end up drowning.
By using reusable grocery bags,🛍 this can eliminate this burden on our environment and our world🌏 will be a little bit cleaner too.
If you were not aware, plastic bags are non-degradable and to produce them requires the use of crude oil,🛢️natural gas,⛽️ petroleum products(which is a nonrenewable resource), and even more fossil fuel than what most ships🛳 use which is crazy!
All of this harmful☠️ stuff to make a little bag…🤦🏾♀️
If you decide to get your hands on some reusable bags🛍💰 (which I hope to convince you to do after reading this blog post💻📝), there will be less plastic bags floating around in our communities, piling up in our landfills, and even collecting in our oceans.🌊
Even though these guys are considered non-degradable, they actually do somewhat ‘degrade’.
It is estimated that it takes about 1,000 years for 1 plastic bag(Yes…1) to decompose.
By the time🕰 the first plastic bag finishes decomposing, most (if not all) of us won’t even be alive. 😳
That is mind-blowing🤯 to me and we continue to produce more and more bags! 🤷🏾♀️
In addition to that, the decomposition environment of the plastic bag has to be “perfect” for it to actually begin to decompose.
That is why most plastic bags just sit in our landfills because the environment is not suitable for the plastic bag to actually begin the decomposition process.
To learn more about this, check out this article that explains how landfills work.
2. Saves You Money💰
Did you know that there is a plastic bag clean up cost💰 that we all have to pay? 🤷🏾♀️
It is estimated that Americans use over 380 billion plastic bags and wraps a year. Due to this consumption, there is a nationwide litter clean up that amounts to as much as $11 billion a year!💰
Like what!? 🤷🏾♀️
Guess where that money is coming from….?
Yep, you guessed it, our taxes! 💸
Just for cleaning up plastic bags?
We should use that money💰to fix these roads🛣 that are always jacked up.
My car🚙 is screaming every time I go down the street.
It is said that if we continue on this path of plastic bag consumption, by 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans🌊 than fish🐠🐟🐳🐋 which is mind-blowing to me!🤯
By the way, California is already spending about $25 million a year to clean up the plastic bags they have.
This number does not include the $8.5 million💰 they spend to just remove them from the streets.
The more reusable bags🛍 we use, the less we will pay tax-wise and can then use that money💰 for other important projects.
To learn more about how much it costs per bag to clean up, check out this article HERE.
Another thing you should realize when it comes to plastic bags is that many stores🏪 are now imposing an extra charge for plastic bags. 💵
They are doing this to lessen plastic bag consumption, but also they are being charged more per bag.
This includes other shopping areas not just the grocery store. 🥬🍓🍅🍌🛒
I am not sure if you are aware of this, but there are about 3 states who have banned the use of plastic bags.
These states include California,☀️ Hawaii,🏝 and (surprisingly) New York. 🏙
They just passed that law in 2019 and will be enforcing it completely by 2020.
To learn more about this plastic bag legislation and see which states are, click HERE.
By using reusable bags, you will be saving money💵 when you go grocery shopping, go to the mall or just running errands.
Oh, and you will be helping out the planet🌏 too.
Go You! 👍🏾
One last thing about this, some stores have what is known as a ‘shopping incentive’.
So if you use reusable bags🛍 and not their bags, they may give you a discount on your purchase💵 or even pay you.
These savings can add up pretty quickly over time.
Some stores🏪 that are utilizing this initiative are Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Kroger, Sprouts Farmers Market, and many more.
Here is a quick list 📝you can check out.
3. De-clutter Your Home
If you are a plastic bag hoarder like my family and I use to be,(emphasis on ‘use to be’😊) then you probably have over 50+ plastic bags chilling in your house.🏡
Think about it…🤔
If you take home at least 5 grocery bags worth of food 🛍🍏🍇🥯🍠🥓 a week that comes out to 20 plastic bags a month.
Now, this is not including double-bagging some of your groceries or even the other bags you may get when you go on a quick shopping trip to the mall or grabbing something from a friend.
This number could EASILY increase to 30 bags a month. 😨
Now if you multiply this number(30) times 12 (for 12 months in a year) this equates to 360 bags a year.
This is almost using one plastic bag a day. 🤯
Now if the majority of people in the USA🇺🇸 are doing this…
I hope you are seeing 👀where I am going with this.
Plastic bags can easily run rampant in your house🏡 quite easily if you collect too many of them.
Now, using reusable bags, though slightly larger, can be folded up and take up significantly less space in your home.
Instead of having about 20 to 50 plastic bags floating around in your house,🏡 you may only have about 4-5 reusable bags🛍 instead.
Now that is a lot of space you are saving in your home!😊👍🏾
4. Durability and Reliability
Reusable bags🛍 are more durable and reliable than plastic bags.
I cannot tell you how many times I would buy groceries, 🛍🥬🥩🥓🍐🍊package them up all nicely to barely make them into my car.🚙
It literally rips as I am putting them in my trunk. 🤦🏾♀️
Yes, you may be thinking,🤔 “why did you make it so heavy, Morgs…?”
That’s the sad thing…
They’re not heavy at all. 🤦🏾♀️
Plastic bags just stink at holding anything.
They are pretty flimsy and they usually do not keep their shape so it can get pretty annoying trying to bag your groceries too.🛍🍇🌶🍅🧀🥓
Did I mention you can barely fit any groceries into these bags? 🤷🏾♀️
Anyways, many reusable bags can hold up to 3 to 4 times as much as the ordinary plastic bag.
Don’t believe me?
Give it a try!
Grab a cotton or nylon bag and fill it up with your groceries 🍎🍓🥕🥬🥒and see what happens!
Also, when you are using bags that don’t give out on you, that means fewer trips to your car! 🚙
I am all about taking one trip (if possible).👍🏾
Since most reusable bags🛍 are so reliable and durable, I can use them for more than a shopping trip.
I could use my reusable totes for the beach,🏖 as a purse👜…
It can definitely be used infinitely.
5. Can Be Recycled and Reused
Did you know that about 91% of plastic bags are not recycled? 😱
It also costs a boatload🛳 to recycle them due to the amount of resin used to create them.
Many companies just sell the plastic they collect to other countries at a loss since it is not very profitable. 💰🙅🏾♀️
In addition to it not being profitable, it is not really solving the problem that we are all facing.
All it is doing is moving plastic from one side of the world🌏 to the other.🤦🏾♀️
This shifting and moving of plastic then creates its home🏡 in our oceans🌊 “magically”.
Now you may be thinking, “wait I use paper bags📄🛍 instead…
I am making a difference. 👍🏾
Those can be reused!” 😆🎊🎉
I am sorry to burst your bubble,🤷🏾♀️ but paper bags📃🛍 produce almost double the amount of atmospheric waste as plastic bags.
In addition to that, the United States🇺🇸 alone chops down about 14 million trees🎄🌴🌳🌲 a year to make the pulp to produce these paper bags. 📄🛍
Reusable bags, on the other hand, are made up of materials that can be recycled and reused over and over and doesn’t contribute to atmospheric waste.
I would rather use something that can be reused in multiple ways.
This also saves you money💰 in the long run too.
It goes back to what I was talking about🗣 back in benefit #2 on how pricey💵 getting rid of plastic bags are.
Anyways, these materials that are used includes cloth, cotton, nylon, hemp, polyester, etc.
To take a deeper look👀 at the materials used for the manufacture of reusable bags🛍 check out this article HERE.
Now that you have the 5 main benefits of using reusable bags, let’s take a quick look at the different types of reusable bags out there.
Different Types of Reusable Shopping Bags🛍
Reusable bags come in all different sizes, styles, and colors.
Figuring out the best kind of bag for you all depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
There are big totes, foldable totes, regular-sized grocery bags, cotton bags, hemp bags, paper bags (yes…paper…smh🤦🏾♀️), totes that keep your food cold,🍍🥬🍇🥓❄️ fabric bags, cotton bags, and so many more.
Most reusable bags are produced from 100% recycled materials which just makes you feel all good inside🥰…
Maybe that’s just me. 🤷🏾♀️
Many grocery stores offer different kinds of reusable bags.
I usually get mine from either Amazon.com or a reputable company.
I want to be able to read👀 reviews on those bags. 🛍
There are some reusable bags that are actually worse than plastic bags(I know…it shocked me too when I saw that, but it is true😱).
It is good to do a little bit of research on the reusable bags you want to purchase.💵
You don’t want to waste money on stuff like this.
To see some other kinds of reusable bags🛍 you can look into and see their advantages and disadvantages check out this article HERE.
Now that you know the many benefits of reusable bags🛍 along with the different types of reusable bags, I want to share with you the kind of reusable bag I use for my everyday/grocery shopping!😊
What Are BagPodz?🤷🏾♀️
BagPodz are reusable bags🛍 that come in a set of 5 bags or 10 bags.
They are eco-friendly since they are made from material that is Bluesign® certified.
Bluesign helps to reduce environmental impact by using stringent, holistic approaches to the manufacture of the different products they produce.
They base their processes on 5 main principles.
Those include resource productivity, consumer safety, water emission,💦 air emission,🌬 and occupational health & safety.
The bags in BagPodz stay neatly packed in a carrying case or pod that makes it convenient to grab and go as well as keeps you organized.
You always have a bag on hand. 🛍
They are like a mini reusable grocery bag system that you can take with you everywhere you go. 🏃🏾♀️
BagPodz are very easy to put away since you can just stuff these bags through the drawstring opening on the end.
No need to fold these guys up neatly.👍🏾
These pods can be stored anywhere in your car. 🚙
I leave mine in the trunk, but they can easily be stored in the glove compartment.
There is a big clip that is attached to the pod so that you can clip these guys to your purse👜 or even to your shopping cart.🛒
At checkout, just unzip, pull out as many bags as you need, package your groceries🍎🥒🥬🥯🧀 and go!
It is truly that simple.😊
These bags are the same size as disposable non-degradable plastic bags, but they are WAY MORE durable 💪🏾 and can handle way more groceries than those guys.
They are made of nylon and can hold up to 50lbs! 🤯
Please show me a plastic bag that can do that!
Leave a comment below👇🏾 with a link🔗 so I can check that out.
Also, with all of these wonderful features of this bag,🛍 they are water-repellent💦 and machine washable.
They come in different colors as well.
There are red, orange, green, and blue (this is the color I have).
Below👇🏾 is a quick little review I did on the comparison of these reusable bags🛍 to plastic bags so that you can see just how tough these bags really are.
To Wrap Things Up
I hope you enjoyed this quick blog post on why you should get your hands on some reusable bags. 🛍
Some final tips on using these kinds of bags:
Store Bags Somewhere You Will Remember Them🤔
Be sure to keep them stored in a location where you will remember to use them.
When I first started to look 👀into reusable bags, 🛍I would always leave them home.
That truly defeated the whole purpose. 🤦🏾♀️
Leave them in the trunk of your car🚙 or even in the glove compartment.
Somewhere you will remember to grab them before you go shopping.🛍
Find Bags For Specific Purposes
Like I stated earlier, there are a ton of different types of reusable bags🛍 out there.
You can purchase different bags for different purposes.
Be sure to know what those purposes are so that you can buy the perfect bags. 😊
For example, if you are going to the beach,🏖 you can grab a lightweight insulated reusable grocery bag(Link) that keeps your food🥬🍑🍎🥗🥪 and drinks 🍷🍻🍾🥤cold❄️ instead of carrying a heavy cooler around with you.
Whatever bags🛍 you decide to get, be sure to remember to research those bags and read reviews on it before purchasing!💰
Wash Your Bags Often🧼🚿
Reusable bags🛍 can collect bacteria🦠 and nastiness over time.🕰
The great thing about these bags you can throw them in the wash and they come out fresh and clean.
I do not recommend throwing them in the dryer though…
No this time🕰 I am not talking from experience…😅
Use Your Bags🛍 For Other Purposes
This goes back to making sure you have different bags for different purposes.
If you do not want to purchase more bags, be sure to reusable the bags you already have for other things other than just shopping. 🛍
Use them for carrying books, 📚your lunch, 🥗🥪beach supplies, ⛱storing other items, etc.
You can use them for pretty much anything.
They are great to help you stay organized.👍🏾
Once again, be sure to research the different bags that you want to purchase.
You get what you pay for, try to keep that in mind. 🧠
Quality is always better than quantity!😊
To using reusable bags,🛍
