A protein shake is a drink that helps you build muscle, improve your health or lose weight.
The idea is that you are providing yourself with a convenient way to increase your protein intake.
This is useful because protein is what the body uses to build muscle,💪🏾 make neurotransmitters and also repair any injuries.
But, not all protein shakes🥤 are made equal.
If you are going to get the best benefits from it, you need to choose your protein powder wisely.
Let’s look at how you can get the most out of your protein shakes and how to choose the best form of protein for you!
Table of Contents
Types of Protein Powders
When you buy protein powder, you’ll have a ton of different options to choose from.
You can choose whey protein, casein protein, egg protein,🥚plant-based protein🍏🍇🥦🥒🥕🍓🍊🍐 (this is the kind I use) or soy protein to name a few!
Whey protein is a good option to create your protein shakes with.
If you are vegan, vegetarian, or can’t do dairy🥛 products then STAY AWAY FROM WHEY!
Your stomach and whole being will thank you if you do. 😊
Granted I am a big advocate for plant-based protein powders because it is gentler in your stomach and digestive tract.
Whey protein is a by-product of the cheese🧀 making process.
It has many health benefits and can be absorbed into the body pretty easily.
Whey protein is more bioavailable when compared to soy or casein protein and cheaper when compared to eggs!🥚
The only exception to this rule is that casein protein may be a better choice if you are making a shake before bed.
The reason for this is because casein protein absorbs slower, providing a steady release of its amino acids into the body throughout the night.💤
If you are vegan or vegetarian like me, a plant-based protein is the next best thing compared to whey.
I enjoy a plant-based protein because it digests better and doesn’t give you a lot of bloating or digestive issues that whey protein can give.
Protein powders come in a variety of mixtures and flavors so try to find one that doesn’t have a ton of carbs, sugars, and fats added to it.
If it does, your healthy drink just turned into an unhealthy one.
Best Plant-Based Protein Powders You Should Look Into
Again, plant-based protein powders🌿 are one of the best kinds of protein powders to have.
It is easy to digest and doesn’t give you those negative side effects 👎🏾 that animal-based protein powders🥛 can give you.
The search for the best plant-based protein powder began when I got home from the gym 🏋🏾♀️ one day and made my usual protein shake.
I drank it like normal, but later on, throughout the day, my stomach began to make noises and it hurt all day.
I was in constant pain and I couldn’t figure out why.
At the time, I did not know it was my protein shake until I tried it again the next day and I realized it was the culprit.
Because of that realization, I started to look for an alternative protein powder that wouldn’t hurt my stomach all day.
If you are looking for a plant-based protein powder🌿 then keep on reading.😊

How To Make Your Smoothie or Protein Shake
Drinking a smoothie with just water and protein powder isn’t very tasty unless you get the right kind of protein powder.
I do this sometimes, but that’s if I am literally running out the door.
If you have the time, you can definitely create a delicious smoothie by adding some wholesome flavors.
These flavors can include but are not limited to bananas🍌, strawberries🍓, kale, raspberries, blackberries, peanut butter🥜, mangoes, spinach, chia seeds, pineapples🍍, apples🍎, oranges🍊, flax seeds, cherries🍒, and various other ingredients.
The key here is to put different flavors together so that you get the maximum health benefits from your smoothie.
Adding whole milk🥛, yogurt, almond milk (I do this since I can’t drink milk), coconut water🥥 💦, etc to improve absorption and testosterone production for example.
Adding strawberries🍓 for vitamin C and antioxidants or an avocado🥑 for some healthy fats are another great option.
All this will provide a ton of extra health benefits and the most out of your protein shake!
