Abdominal Weight Loss: Yoga Can Help You Lose the Gut!

Oh, belly fat….how I loathe thee!

You show when I least expect it and you seem to NEVER go away!

There must be a way to get rid of you ONCE AND FOR ALL!

What most people might not realize is that yoga can actually help immensely for weight loss.

Especially in the abdominal area.

There are specific poses that target the excess weight in your abdomen.

Couple that up with a customized diet and you have yourself a fat burning weight loss program!

The results you will begin to see will be EXTREME!

Let’s go over the best yoga poses to help you lose that gut, shall we?

1. The Sun Salutation☀️

This is a full-body yoga flow.

This is one of my favorite sequences!

You are using your upper body, your lower body, and your abs.

The sun salutation is a combination of poses that serve as a warm up-routine for a yoga session or class.

I see this as a mini workout session more than a warm-up.😂

Again, I do power yoga and we do a sun salutation first thing each class and we go through the poses quickly so I am sweating after the 1st time through.

I love😍 that this sequence warms up my body very quickly and it helps with loosening up tight muscles.

The sun salutation☀️is very similar to the popular calisthenics exercise known as burpees.

If you do not know what a burpee is, here is a quick video showing you how to do one below. 👇🏾

Due to the forward and backward bending motions with the sun salutation,☀️after performing a few of these on a daily basis, you are bound to notice a difference all over your body.

In your arms, in your legs, and most importantly in your abs!

You will also begin to see some muscle definition💪🏾 that you probably have never seen before or regained if you lost it.

2. The Bow Pose🏹

This simple pose can be challenging especially if you never did it before.

So let’s take it slow.

Start by lying face down on the mat.

Inhale and bend your knees up.

Stretch back with your arms and hold on to your ankles keeping your fingers and thumbs all together on the outside.

Inhale and at the same time raise your head and chest, pulling at your ankles and lifting your knees and thighs off the floor.

Breathe normally, trying to lift your legs higher and lifting your head up.

You are now bent like a bow, balancing the weight of your body on your abdomen.

You can stop there, but if you can still stretch further, then slide your hands down your legs and lift them higher up, keeping your knees together and pull them back as much as you can.

Hold this pose for a few normal deep breaths, then lower yourself slowly and gently back to the face-down position.

Again, this is going to take time to master so if you cannot get that high off the floor, that is okay.

You are still going to reap the benefits of this pose.

If performed correctly, you should be resting on your abdomen.

This pose helps with strengthening your back muscles and opening up your chest.

Needless to say, it is a pose commonly recommended to target that problem area as well as help to prevent and correct chronic constipation!

Super cool….yet gross right?🤢

When performing this pose, it is a good idea to start off slow.

You may not be able to grab your ankles right away and that is okay!

You are still going to feel the effects of this pose even if it is modified a little bit.

3. The Peacock Pose🦚

This pose is a little bit more challenging.

The objective is to balance your abdomen on your conjoined elbows while simultaneously raising your legs and head off the floor.

Yes, yes, I know what you are thinking…am I crazy!?🤷🏾‍♀️

At times, yes, but this pose is not for beginners.

You can always try to ease yourself into this pose as you get stronger💪🏾 in your yoga practice.

Below👇🏾are some modified versions of the peacock pose🦚 you can try later on in your yoga practice.

Merely attempting this pose will speed up your weight loss and help to detoxify your visceral organs.

Your visceral organs refer to your heart, lungs, abdomen, liver, pancreas, and intestines.

The preparatory stage of this pose will still get you the results you are looking for until you can fully master this pose.

So take your time🕰and ease into this pose as best you can.

4. The Abdominal Lift

This is not a pose, per se.

It is a specific exercise that involves you exhaling your breath and pulling the diaphragm in while holding the breath out.

This is a specific abdominal exercise for spiritual rejuvenation🙏🏾 and detoxification.

It also gives you a great workout for your diaphragm.

When you first perform this exercise, it may feel weird, but the results are what count right?🤷🏾‍♀️

Other Abdominal Poses

Now there are other poses out there that can help you achieve the same goal.

These poses include the shoulder-stand, the forward-bending pose, the spinal twist, and the wheel pose.

Not only do they target that problem area, but they also help you tone your muscles and fast!

Don’t just get rid of the belly fat, why not work out your whole body while you are at it!

A great yoga workout that can help you target this area is called Yoga Burn and I did a review on this program too!

To Wrap Things Up…

I strongly recommend that you eat a healthy diet to help increase the positive effects of these poses.

Working out is only 20% of your overall results.

The other 80% comes from your diet alone!

Other fantastic exercises for abdominal weight loss include intense aerobics, the use of the yoga wheel, basic sit-ups, and windmills.

Empower yourself with these simple tips and yoga poses to achieve your weight loss goals!

Please note that if you are pregnant or on your menstrual cycle, some of these poses might not be the best to execute.

Definitely, check with your physician👩🏾‍⚕️ before attempting any of these poses.
