What does it really mean to live in the present?
It means to enjoy the time you have right now and not focus on the past or worry about the future.
Is There Even A Tomorrow?🤷🏾♀️
There is a saying that says, “Tomorrow never comes.”
Tomorrow is only a concept and is always waiting to come around the corner.
When you think about it, there really isn’t a tomorrow because when ‘tomorrow’ comes it becomes ‘today’ and when it passes it becomes ‘yesterday’.
Did you know that you are giving up your personal power when you live in the past or in the future?
You are giving up on your life.
It is like this movie I watched when I was a child called, ‘Click’ with Adam Sandler.
His character literally wished his life away because he wanted so badly to get to the future.
He missed out on life and didn’t appreciate what he already had.
Why ‘Not Living’ In The Present Is Bad
By not living in the present, you are surrendering your power to create and transform your life for the better.
If there were changes you wanted to make in your life, you can only do that in the present.
Keep in mind that the ONLY part of your life that you have ANY control over is the present.
Not the past and most definitely not the future, so by not living in the present and focusing on those two moments in time, you are missing out on enjoying today.
How To Accept The Life You Have Now
The best way to accept the life that you have right now is by learning from past mistakes and living each day to the fullest.
How often do you beat yourself up about the things you did in the past?
I know I have MANY TIMES, but the fact still remains…
I cannot go back and change it.🙅🏾♀️
No matter how often I think about it or wish I said ‘this’ or did ‘that’.
You only have control of the present.
That is why it is considered such a gift. 🎁
You can execute what you learned from the past and prepare for the future by making plans in the present.
Once you can accept this fact and can fully forgive yourself completely, then and only then can you finally move forward in life and not hang on to the past.
The future is a similar concept.
You can’t even see the future let alone change any part of it, but it’s like the saying says, “Tomorrow never comes.”
Truly there is no ‘tomorrow’ when you think about it because it turns into today.
In that case, you kind of have no choice, but to live in the present.
Because of this, here are 5 ways to help you focus on living in the present starting today.
1. Try Not To Quiet Your Mind🧠
I know that this sounds like such a weird concept since this is the first thing you want to do especially if you have a racing mind like myself.
The thing is, your mind is always going to be racing no matter what you do.
You are built to think and when you try to quiet the mind, you are actually disturbing it all the more.
Instead, simply observe your thoughts as if they were leaves 🍃🍂 floating in the wind.💨
There are no good or bad thoughts, so try not to judge or engage them.
2. You Are Not Your Thoughts💭
There are too many times in my life where I have identified myself with my thoughts.
The things is…
YOU ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS!
That negative inner dialogue in your head is so far from the truth it’s laughable.
When I use to believe those negative thoughts in my head, I would counteract them with 5 positive things about myself.
By the time I was done, those negative thoughts no longer had any power over me.
Give it a try!
Every time you get a negative thought, counteract it with 5 positive ones.
You are more than your thoughts and knowing this fact and believing it will allow you to silence those negative thoughts each and every time they come.
3. Breathe.🌬You Are Alive
Take time right now and stop reading and shift your focus to your breathing…
No worries. I can wait.
Notice that your breath is neither voluntary or involuntary.
It is something that you do, yet at the same time it is something that ‘does you.’
When you focus on your breathing you come back to the present moment.
Practice conscious breathing every day to bring your mind back to the present.
4. Music🎶 For Meditation🧘🏾♀️
Soft music and the sounds of nature is one of the best ways to help you to meditate and allow a peaceful energy to wash over you.
It is not only calming, but it helps to transport you to a place of focus.
I enjoy listening to the sounds of nature when I meditate to help my mind become clearer and to go to a more relaxed state.
I also listen to the sounds of nature when I have difficulties getting to sleep. 😴
Definitely give that a try if you have trouble sleeping too.
If that doesn’t help and you are still struggling with getting to sleep check out my other blog, OrganicFye, and read my post about how smoothies can help you sleep.
5. Practice Mindfulness🧘🏾♀️
This is the essence of living in the present.
Practicing mindfulness means to practice your awareness in every part of your day.
Whether you are washing clothes👕👚👖or eating dinner, your mind is focused on what you are doing at that present moment.
You are not thinking about the bills that you need to pay or the phone call 📞 you need to make when you get back into the office.
You are simply living in that moment.
To Wrap Things Up…
Try to enjoy each day that is given to you.
You can’t get it back once it passes.
Making the most of each day will bring so much joy to your life.
It does for me.
Try your best to not allow your mindset or your current circumstances to keep you from living in the present either.
Your circumstances can change in a blink of an eye so try not to let that hold you back.
I hope learning why you should live in the present and the 5 ways to do so brings you more peace.
You only have the power to make a difference in the present and no other point in time.
So let go of the past and try not to worry about the future.
The only enjoyment you can create is in the present, so try to make the most of it! ☺️
