Create Your Zen Place

There are many ways to turn your home (or any place you want) into a zen place. Let’s quickly recap what zen is. It is a practice of returning to the self. Returning to the self-requires knowing yourself, what you like, and what brings you the most joy. Many zen designs have natural elements in it, but you don’t have to stop there! Your zen place can incorporate anything in it that brings you peace, relaxation, and calm. A place that gives you a break from everyday life so you can rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit.

Here are some tips to help you achieve a zen place in your home or anywhere you would like to have a little bit more serenity.
These tips are a good foundation for creating a zen place, but you can tweak them any way you want so that it is tailored to what you like and who you are:
1. Earthy Palette

Most zen-inspired designs involve different shades of natural colors such as greens, beige, white, blues, browns, and grey. These colors help to induce a sense of relaxation and calmness. Having a balance between some of these colors (or any other color you choose) can really bring a sense of harmony and flow which is very important to creating a zen place. To create diversity between the different colors, combine 2 matching colors or play with a different shade of your favorite colors until you find something that speaks to you.

2. Adding Softness To Your Feet
Some ideas for softness for your zen place is parquet flooring (which is composed of wooden blocks arranged in a geometric pattern). Other forms of softness you can add to your zen place are soft warm carpets and area rugs. Just make sure that the style of flooring you choose match the rest of your design.
3. Having Natural Lighting
For a more relaxing space, replace harsh lighting like fluorescent lights with more calming and nature-inspired lights such as candles (even fake candles). Try mixing up the kinds of lighting you use with floor lamps, desk lamps, or wall mounted lights. Choose lighting that allows you to adjust the intensity of the light so that your space can be as calming as possible. You also want it to still give you the right amount of light so that you are able to see. Another idea is diffusers. Many (if not all of them) have different color lights built into them so you can enjoy a beautiful scent along with calm lighting.
4. Keep Furniture Simple and Natural 

Zen style furniture is characterized by simple and clear lines avoiding complicated designs. It is usually made from natural materials that bring a sense of warmth and relaxation. Some storage pieces such as closets, chests, and drawers may be brought to life by being painted in the colors that match the rest of your interior. The bedroom is usually the key room for a zen place and is recommended to take special care when designing this area. For example, have your bed close to the best source of natural light and avoid placing it in front of the doorway or passage area. Try to keep the bed decorations to a minimum too. I struggle with this part of zen design because I bombard my bed with pillows!

5. Minimum Decorations and Eliminating Clutter is Key
Keep decorations and accessories to a minimum or eliminate them altogether. When your life is hectic and cluttered and your zen place is too, it can bring more stress and anxiety instead of relieving you of it. By keeping your zen place free from clutter and too many decorations it can help you to clear out your mind.

Keep only the essentials, but feel free to add any items that will bring you extra comfort.
6. Natural Scents and Sweet Aromas
Homemade sprays, incense, and candles are a great way to fill your space with a beautiful natural aroma. Essential oils and diffusers are another great way to enhance your room with fresh scents. These scents can not only be relaxing and calming when you are about to go to sleep, but they are also invigorating when it’s time to wake up.
7. Bring In Calmness with Some Green Plants

Being around nature brings a calming effect to your whole body. Incorporate plants into your zen place. They not only bring you more peace, but their soothing green color brings in a pop of color to your space and also provides oxygen. Bonsai trees or hanging terrariums are another great choice to add to your zen place and are usually incorporated into many zen decor ideas.

8. Removed Electronic Distractions
We live in a day and age where technology is EVERYWHERE. Granted, technology can bring you some peace and calm if you are using it for those purposes only. Other than that, electronic devices can be very distracting and can actually cause more harm than good in this sense.
Trying to keep up with social media or watching the news (which seems to always be negative) only brings negativity into your life instead of positivity. I say make your zen place a DEVICE FREE ZONE! A little retreat from the world and from your busy life. Try to give yourself a break! A place to unwind and step away from the hustle and bustle of life. So, put your phone, iPad, MacBook, tablet and any other device that can distract you from focusing on returning to the self away and let go.

Some of these tips may not work for the kind of zen place you are going for, but this is a good starting place. Remember, your zen place is a space that brings you a sigh of relief when you walk into it. A place where you can completely be yourself and revitalize your mind, body, and spirit.
