There are many ways to turn your home (or any space you want) into a zen place.
Let’s quickly recap… What Is Zen?
It is a practice of returning to the self.
Returning to the self-requires knowing yourself.
What you like, what you don’t like, and what brings you the most joy.
Many zen designs have natural elements in it, but you don’t have to stop there!
Your zen place can incorporate anything in it that brings you peace, relaxation, and calm.
A space that gives you a break from everyday life so you can rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit.
Here are some tips to help you achieve your new zen place in your home or anywhere you would like to have a little bit more peace.
These tips are a good foundation, but you can tweak them any way you want so that it is tailored to what you like and who you are.
Let’s get started!
Add Some Earthy Colors
Most zen designs involve different shades of natural colors such as greens, beige, white, blues, browns, and grey.
Literally the colors of nature. 🌳🍃🍂🌲🍁
These colors help to induce a sense of relaxation and calmness.
Having a balance between some of these colors (or any other color you choose) can bring a sense of harmony and flow which is super important when creating your zen place.
To create diversity between the different colors, combine 2 matching colors or play with a different shade of your favorite colors until you find something that speaks to you.
I love the color teal since it reminds me of the ocean🌊 or a body of water in general.
When I created my zen place, it definitely had teal in it.
Bring In Some Natural Lighting💡
For a more relaxing space, replace harsh lighting like fluorescent lights with more calming and nature-inspired lights such as candles.🕯️
Even fake candles will do.
Try to mix up the kind of lighting you use with floor lamps, desk lamps, string lights, or even wall mounted lights.
If you can, try to choose lighting that allows you to adjust the intensity of the light so that your space can be as calming as possible yet you can still see.
Another idea is diffusers.
I love these things!
Many (if not all of them) have different color lights built into them so you can enjoy a beautiful scent along with a calm light show.
Adding Softness To Your Tired Feet👣
Some ideas for softness for your zen place is parquet flooring which is composed of wooden blocks arranged in a geometric pattern.
Other forms of softness you can add to your zen place are warm carpets and area rugs.
My feet just feel so cozy when I am on a fluffy rug.
Try to make sure that the style of flooring you choose, matches/flows with the rest of your design.
Keep Furniture Natural and Simple🛋️
Zen style furniture is usually simple in design with clean lines and no complicated patterns.
It is usually made from natural materials that bring a sense of warmth and relaxation.
Some storage pieces such as closets, chests, and drawers may be brought to life by being painted in the colors that match the rest of your interior.
A zen place is usually created in the bedroom since that should be the place you relax in the most.
This room, in particular, is recommended to be taken with special care (if you decide to make this room your zen place) due to this fact.
For example, have your bed close to the best source of natural light and avoid placing it in front of the doorway or passage area.
Try to keep the bed decorations to a minimum as well.
I struggle with this because I bombard my bed with pillows! (Yes! 🤤)
** Simplicity is the best policy when it comes to any zen design or zen place. **
Minimum Decorations and Eliminating Clutter is Key
Keep decorations and accessories to a minimum or eliminate them altogether.
When your life is hectic and cluttered and your zen place is too, it can bring more stress and anxiety instead of relieving it.
By keeping your zen place free from clutter and too many decorations it can help you to clear your mind.
**Rule of Thumb With Decorations In Your Zen Place**
Keep only the essentials, but feel free to add any items that will bring you extra comfort.
Natural Scents and Sweet Aromas
Homemade sprays, incense, and candles🕯️are a great way to fill your space with a beautiful natural aroma.
These scents can not only be relaxing and calming when you are about to go to sleep,😴 but they are also invigorating when it’s time to wake up.☀️
I use my diffuser every night with lavender essential oil in it.
One night I was using it with this same scent in there(I definitely put too much by accident 😅) and my mom walked past my room and she literally called my room the ‘lavender field.’
It was awesome!
Bring In Calmness with Some Green Plants🌿🎍
Being around nature 🌼🌳🌸🌲brings a calming effect to your whole body.
Well, it does for me anyways.
That is why I love going on a hike!⛰
Try to incorporate some plants into your zen design if possible.
They not only provide oxygen, but their soothing green color brings in a pop of color to your space.
Bonsai trees or hanging terrariums are another great choice to add to your zen place and are usually incorporated into many zen decor designs.
No Technology Zone📱💻🖥️🎮
We live in a day and age where technology is EVERYWHERE!
Granted, technology can bring you some peace and calm if you are using it for those purposes only.
Other than that,
electronic devices can be very distracting and can actually cause more harm than good in this sense.
Trying to keep up with social media or watching the news (which seems to always be negative) only brings negativity into your life instead of positivity.
I say make your zen place a DEVICE FREE ZONE!
A little retreat from the world and from the hustle and bustle of life.
So, put your phone, iPad, MacBook, tablet and any other device that can distract you from focusing on returning to the self away and let go.
Try to give yourself a break!
Even if it is for 10-15 minutes a day.
To Wrap Things Up…
Creating your zen place is giving yourself a little bit of peace in your hectic life.
Some of these tips may not work for the kind of zen place you are going for, but this is a good starting place.
Remember, your zen place is a space that brings you a sigh of relief when you walk into it.
A space where you can completely be yourself and revitalize your mind, body, and spirit.🧘🏾♀️
